To mark the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee there will be series of events at the Bishopsgate
Institute (London) looking at Monarchy and
Republicanism. Starting at the brief point in history when England was a
republic and moving up to the royal family today, the series culminates in a
debate over who should be head of state in Britain. The first event
on the 16 February will be of particular interest to 17th century enthusiasts.

Examining the English Civil War and its legacy, this talk
highlights the flourishing of republican ideas and the brief experience of a
republican government in England in the mid-17th century. Also explored is
the subsequent powerful influence of the English revolution, not only
on English politics but also internationally.
Dr Ted Vallance is a
historian of early modern Britain and Reader in Early Modern History at the
University of Roehampton. His publications include A Radical History of
Britain: Visionaries, Rebels and Revolutionaries and The Glorious Revolution:
1688 - Britain's Fight for Liberty.

The Fairfax 400th Anniversary Conference |

A two day inter-disciplinary conference to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Sir Thomas Fairfax will be held at the University of Leicester from 30 June to 1 July 2012. This conference will investigate the impact of Sir Thomas Fairfax (1612-1671) upon his time and contemporaries. It will combine the approaches of historians and literary scholars to examine afresh his multiple roles as a general, politician, landowner, husband and literary figure.
